
Stop Letting Your Ovens Eat Your Floor Space
If you’ve spent any time on a brake pad coating line, you know the struggle. Those standard convection ovens are monsters. They need these massive, winding tunnels just to get the parts up to temperature and keep them there. It kills your factory layout and slows everything down. We’ve found a better way. Instead of blowing hot air around, we use short-wave infrared (SWIR) emitters.
Why IR actually works
Think about it this way: hot air is slow. It has to heat up the air in the oven first, and then that air eventually heats the part. It’s a lot of wasted effort. IR is different. It’s direct. The energy hits the coating immediately and sinks right into the surface of the brake pad. This kicks off the chemical cross-linking way faster. You get the exact same cure depth, but you don’t need a tunnel that stretches across the entire shop to do it. You can shrink the oven and still get a perfect finish.
The nitty-gritty of the setup
We build these systems with high wattage density. Why? Because nobody likes waiting for a gas oven to “warm up” in the morning. With IR, you’re basically instant. You can flip a switch, and you’re ready to go. Plus, if the line stops, you can kill the power immediately. No more paying to heat an empty oven. But, there is a catch. Because the heat is so intense, you can’t just wing it with the conveyor speed. If the belt crawls or hitches, you’re going to scorch the coating or shock the friction material. You need a rock-solid PLC-driven belt to keep everything moving at a steady clip. Precision is the price you pay for that kind of speed.
