
Getting Your IR Lamp Layout Right for Custom Paint Booths
When we’re putting together a custom heating wall, there’s really only one thing that matters: getting the heat to hit the car evenly. The problem is that a “standard” layout almost never works. A low-profile sports car and a high-roof van don’t soak up infrared energy the same way. If you just slap lamps in a basic grid, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll end up with cold spots on the lower panels or, even worse, you’ll bake the roof until it blisters. The trick is in the vertical map. We don’t just guess; we look at the height and the curves of the cars you’re actually painting. If you’re dealing with big SUVs, we pack more lamps into the middle and upper sections. Why? Because there’s more distance between the wall and the chassis, and you need that extra punch to bridge the gap. Then there’s the spacing. Shortwave IR lamps are great because they heat up fast, but they’re finicky. If you crowd them too close together, you risk overheating the paint before it has a chance to flow properly. But if they’re too far apart? You get stripes. The sweet spot is a slight overlap in the radiation patterns. That’s how you get a flawless finish. I also always suggest using zoned switching in your power controllers. It’s a lifesaver. If you’re curing a small sedan, you can just kill the power to the bottom row. It saves electricity and stops the floor from becoming a sauna. Now, you might be tempted to just go for the highest wattage lamps available to speed things up. It sounds like a win, but it comes with a price. Huge wattage puts a massive strain on your electrical panels and can actually warp the booth structure over time. I usually recommend a different route: medium-wattage lamps with a tighter vertical pitch. It spreads the electrical load and gives you a much smoother temperature gradient. Just one thing—make sure your ventilation is up to the task. If you can’t pull the ambient heat out of the booth, your lamps will cycle off too early, and you’ll be sitting there wondering why your cure time is dragging.
