Getting Your IR Lamp Layout Right for Custom Paint Walls
When we’re building a custom heating wall for a paint booth, we don’t just throw some lamps on a rack and call it a day. That’s a recipe for disaster. Think about it: a low-slung coupe and a high-roof van don’t soak up heat the same way. If your spacing is off, you’ll end up with annoying cold spots on the chassis and burnt edges on the panels. Not a great look. Getting the vertical layout sorted We figure out the lamp spacing based on exactly how much surface area we need to hit. We stick with shortwave infrared emitters because they punch through paint layers fast. But here’s the trick: to stop “striping”—those ugly lines where the paint over-cures—we overlap the radiation cones of each lamp. It creates a smooth, even blanket of heat. You’ve also got to map everything to the height of the cars you’re actually working on. For big SUVs, we pack more lamps into the mid-section where most of the heavy metal is. We usually build these on a modular rail system. It’s a lifesaver. You can just slide the lamps up or down to hit the sweet spot depending on what’s in the booth. The balance of power and heat High-wattage quartz tubes are great for fast turnarounds. They get the job done quickly. But there’s a catch. If you cram too many lamps into one tight spot, the ambient heat becomes insane. If your exhaust system can’t handle that kind of load, your overheat sensors are going to trip and shut the whole line down. It’s a headache you don’t need. We find it’s much better to balance the wattage per meter so the surface temperature stays steady. Making it last in a real shop We wire these walls with quick-disconnect connectors. Why? Because lamps eventually burn out. When one goes, you shouldn’t have to tear the whole wall apart just to swap a tube. It should be a two-minute job. Plus, we use reinforced quartz glass. Shops are rough environments. These lamps need to take a beating and handle sudden temperature swings without cracking. It just makes the whole setup feel solid.
