
How to Stop Brake Squeal Before It Starts
Ever wonder why some brake pads just won’t stop screaming? Usually, it comes down to how they were cured. If the outside of the friction material hardens way faster than the middle, you get these internal stresses. It creates a messy, uneven density throughout the lining. When you hit the brakes, that inconsistency turns into vibration. And vibration? That’s where the noise comes from. We found a better way to handle this. Instead of relying on those old-school convection ovens, we switched to short-wave quartz infrared (IR) heaters.
Getting the heat where it actually matters
Hot air is slow. It heats the surface and then just… hopes the heat eventually reaches the center. It’s a waiting game. IR is different. It penetrates the material directly. The quartz elements send out energy that makes the molecules inside the lining vibrate. This means the core and the surface cure at the same time. You end up with a part that’s solid and uniform all the way through.
The nitty-gritty on the tech
We use quartz tubes with high wattage so they ramp up fast. We also tune the wavelength to hit the specific absorption bands of the resin binders. Basically, you stop wasting money heating up the oven walls and start putting that energy directly into the part. It’s much more efficient. One heads-up: you’ve got to keep a close eye on your temperature controllers. IR moves energy so quickly that it’s easy to overshoot your target. If your PID loops aren’t dialed in, you’ll scorch the resin before you even realize what happened.
Setting it up and keeping it running
We use heavy-duty quartz glass because it can handle the thermal shock of being turned on and off all day. They’re designed to be drop-in replacements for your standard industrial racks, wired up to high-voltage controllers to keep the heat steady. The biggest tip?Keep the tubes clean. A little bit of dust or an oil splash on the quartz creates “hot spots.” Those spots will burn out your filament way too soon. Just give them a quick wipe-down during your scheduled downtime, and the tubes will last a lot longer.
