
Getting Your IR Lamp Layout Right for Brake Pad Coating
When you’re setting up a heating wall for brake pad coating, it’s easy to get hung up on the total wattage. But here’s the secret: the total power doesn’t actually matter as much aswhere the lamps are sitting. If your vertical distribution is off, you’re going to have a bad time.
Dealing with Different Part Sizes
The tricky part is that not every vehicle is the same. Brake assemblies sit at different heights depending on the model. If you just space your lamps evenly across the wall, you’ll end up with cold spots in some places and scorched surfaces in others. We handle this by “zoning.” Instead of a one-size-fits-all grid, we map out exactly where the pads are and pack the lamps tighter in those specific areas. Now, using shortwave IR is great because it punches right through the coating quickly. But be careful. If you cluster too many lamps together, you create these intense hotspots. You have to find that sweet spot—enough power to cure the core, but not so much that you burn the top layer before the inside is even warm.
The Hardware Side of Things
We usually go with modular racks. The distance between the lamp and the part is everything. If the gap is too wide, you get “zebra stripes”—those annoying lines of uncured coating where the heat didn’t overlap. But if you push them too close? You risk burning out the lamps because there isn’t enough air moving around the quartz envelopes to keep them cool. And don’t skimp on the brackets. We use reinforced mounts because heat makes metal sag. If a lamp shifts even a few millimeters, your entire heat map is ruined.
Speed vs. Uniformity
It’s tempting to just keep adding lamps to speed up the line. More lamps mean faster curing, sure. But there’s a catch. More lamps mean a heavier hit to your electrical system and a lot more ambient heat inside the booth. If your ventilation can’t keep up, the whole booth basically becomes an oven. That actually slows down the cooling phase and can mess with your final finish. Sometimes you have to dial back the raw speed just to keep the temperature stable. It’s all about that balance.
