
Let’s Talk About Our 220mm Carbon Fiber Heating Elements
If you need heat—and you need it now—these 220mm carbon fiber lamps are your best bet. We built these for projects where waiting for a heater to warm up just isn’t an option. Instead of the old-school metal coils you’re used to, we use a carbon fiber filament tucked inside a high-purity quartz tube. It’s a simple change that makes a massive difference.
Why Carbon Fiber?
Here’s the thing: carbon fiber has much lower electrical resistance than tungsten. That means the second you flip the switch, it hits operating temperature. It’s nearly instant. You’re getting a heavy dose of medium-to-long wave infrared radiation. This is the “sweet spot” for heating. It sinks into plastics and organic materials much deeper and more effectively than the short-wave stuff.
The Build
We use quartz glass because it can take a beating when the temperature swings wildly. Inside, the filament lives in a vacuum or an inert gas environment so it doesn’t just burn up the moment it gets hot. One of the best parts? Carbon fiber doesn’t expand and contract as much as metal does. You can click these on and off all day long, and you won’t have to worry about the filament sagging or snapping. A quick heads-up on the setup: You’ll probably want to wire these into a PID controller. But be careful with your housing. These lamps put out an intense amount of heat. If your reflector is even slightly off, you might end up warping your chassis. Give them some breathing room.
Putting Them to Work
These are great for drying tunnels, pre-heating PET bottles, or curing textiles. They basically kill the “warm-up lag” you get with ceramic heaters. But, there is a trade-off. Carbon fiber is more delicate than those thick metal coils. If you drop one or squeeze it too hard while mounting it, the filament will snap. **Pro tip:**Wear gloves. Seriously. If you leave fingerprints on the quartz, those skin oils create “hot spots.” Those spots are where the tube usually fails first, so keep it clean.
