
Let’s Talk Carbon Fiber Torque Tubes
If you’re trying to move rotational force without adding a ton of dead weight to your build, carbon fiber is the way to go. It does the heavy lifting that steel or aluminum usually handles, but it doesn’t bring that annoying weight penalty along for the ride.
Getting the Twist Right
Here’s the thing about building these: it’s all in how you lay the fibers. If we just ran the fibers straight down the length of the tube, it would be great for pulling, but it would snap the moment you tried to twist it. To stop that, we wrap the fibers at ±45-degree angles. This puts the strength exactly where the stress hits when the tube starts spinning. And a quick tip on size—go for a wider diameter with a thinner wall. You’ll get way more rigidity than you would with a skinny, solid rod, even if they weigh the same.
The Catch (Because there’s always one)
Now, you have to remember that carbon fiber doesn’t play by the same rules as metal. Steel is forgiving. It’ll bend or warp to give you a warning before it gives up. Carbon fiber? Not so much. It holds its shape perfectly right up until the second it hits its limit, and then it justsnaps. You also need to keep an eye on the heat. Most of our tubes use epoxy resins, but if things get hotter than 120°C, that resin starts to soften. Once that happens, the layers can slide apart and the whole thing fails. If you’re working in a furnace, let us know—we can swap the epoxy for cyanate ester or polyimide to keep things stable.
Putting it All Together
Installing these requires a bit of a light touch. Carbon fiber is surprisingly abrasive, and it hates being squeezed. If you just clamp down on the shell, you’ll crush the fibers and create a weak spot that’ll eventually crack. Instead, we use metallic inserts or sleeves at the ends. Whether you go with a shrink-fit or a strong adhesive bond, the goal is the same: you want the load to spread evenly across the tube. Do it right, and it feels solid. Do it wrong, and you’re just waiting for a crack.
