Why We Use Carbon Fiber for PET Bottle Blowing
If you’ve spent any time around PET blowing, you know the struggle of getting the heat just right. We switched to carbon fiber heating elements because they just handle the job differently than those old quartz or halogen lamps. They use short-wave infrared radiation. In plain English? The heat sinks deep into the preform wall fast. You get the plastic to that sweet spot—the glass transition temperature—without scorching the outside. No burnt spots, no ruined batches. The nitty-gritty on power Here is how it works: current runs through a carbon filament. The cool thing about carbon is that it doesn’t thin out or shift around over time like metal does. You get the same amount of heat from one end of the tube to the other. But you have to be smart about your wattage. If you want a faster cycle, go higher. Just keep an eye on your power supply so you don’t overload it. And a word of warning: don’t try to “force” a slow ramp-up by cranking the voltage too high. You’ll just fry the ends of the filament. Built for the grind We wrap these elements in high-purity quartz glass so they don’t crack when the temperature swings. Plus, we made them as drop-in replacements. You don’t need a degree in engineering to swap them into your oven banks; the connectors are standard, so your maintenance team can get them wired up and back online quickly. Another win? Carbon fiber handles vibration way better than tungsten. When your machine is screaming along at top speed, these lamps aren’t going to just snap. The reality of the shop floor At the end of the day, you just want the heat to be even. Carbon fiber does this beautifully. It kills those annoying “cold spots” that leave you with wonky wall thickness in your finished bottles. One thing to watch out for, though: these things runhot. Make sure your airflow and cooling fans are actually doing their job. If the oven bank gets too stifling, your lamps won’t last nearly as long. Keep them cool, and they’ll keep working.
